Redshifted 21 cm Emission From the Pre-Reionization Era I. Mean Signal and Linear Fluctuations
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use cosmological simulations of reionization to predict the possible signal from the redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen in the pre-reionization era and to investigate the observability of this signal. We show that the separation of the mean (global) signal over the whole sky from the known foreground contamination may be feasible, but very challenging. In agreement with previous studies, we demonstrate that measuring angular fluctuations in the H I signal is likely to be extremely difficult if not impossible because of the overwhelming contamination from the galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. However, we show that the sharp H I fluctuations in the frequency domain should be easily separable from the relatively smooth spectra of the foregrounds, and that these fluctuations should be detectable even at moderate angular resolution (∼ 10− 20 arcmin). We use cosmological simulations of reionization to predict the effect of large H II regions around individual high-redshift quasars on the possible signal from the redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen in the pre-reionization era. We show that these H II regions appear as “spectral dips” in frequency space with equivalent widths in excess of 3mK MHz or depths in excess of about 1.5mK, and t...

We study the prospects for extracting detailed statistical properties of the neutral Hydrogen distribution during the era of reionization using the brightness temperature fluctuations from redshifted 21 cm line emission. Detection of this signal is complicated by contamination from foreground sources such as diffuse Galactic synchrotron and free-free emission at low radio frequencies, extragala...

0556-2821=20 During the transition from a neutral to a fully reionized universe, scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons via free electrons leads to a new anisotropy contribution to the temperature distribution. If the reionization process is inhomogeneous and patchy, the era of reionization is also visible via brightness temperature fluctuations in the redshifted 21 cm line emi...
متن کاملFluctuations in 21cm Emission After Reionization
The fluctuations in the emission of redshifted 21cm photons from neutral intergalactic hydrogen will provide an unprecedented probe of the reionization era. Conventional wisdom assumes that this 21cm signal disappears as soon as reionization is complete, when little atomic hydrogen is left through most of the volume of the inter-galactic medium (IGM). However observations of damped Lyα absorber...
متن کاملProbing the bispectrum at high redshifts using 21 cm HI observations
Observations of fluctuations in the redshifted 21 cm radiation from neautral hydrogen (HI) are perceived to be an important future probe of the universe at high redshifts. Under the assimption that at redshifts z ≤ 6 (Post-Reionization Era) the HI traces the underlying dark matter with a possible bias, we investigate the possibility of using observations of redshifted 21 cm radiation to detect ...
